Analysis of
Hunger Games
In this clip you are seeing Katniss being represented as an
intelligent female but with stereotypical manly features. In the long shot you
are shown Katniss in her practical clothing and her hair messy and dirty
clothing. She also has mud on her face and very minimal make up on. The
archetypal women is normally obsessed with the way she looks and wants to look
good but Katniss doesn’t care at this moment of time because of the messy look
she is showing to us.
The mise en scene in the over the shoulder shot shows that
Katniss doesn’t follow the stereotype of women, as the audience are shown the
detail of the mud on her face as well as the concentration she has, which then
tells you that her appearance is the last thing on her mind. In this shot we
are also shown focus pulls with a mix of point of view shots. The focus pull
shots are used when showing the audience her face and then what she is looking at.
These two shots also show the audience what Katniss is thinking of doing and
what she can do to destroy the enemies supplies. This shows us Katniss’s intelligence.
Katniss isn’t being represented as the stereotypical female,
there are many shots in this scene which show the audience that Katniss is in a
non-archetypal place for a women and would normally be a place for a man to be.
Katniss is being shown hiding away from the enemies in the bushes and is being
shown watching the enemies’ supplies by the different types of shots used. Normally
women’s stereotypes are nurturing and caring for others, however this shot of
Katniss shows she is highly skilled and doesn’t follow stereotypical women features.
The ambient sound of her breathing shows the focus in her
planning which again shows the audience her intelligence. Katniss is given a
bow and arrow as her prop in this scene, this again shows the audience that
Katniss is very intelligent and highly skilled as she is using a stereotypical man
prop.
Near to the end of this scene, there a quite a few close ups
being used on Katniss and the bow and arrow. This is highlighting to the audience
her skills in planning her attack on the enemies’ supplies and the skills she
has as a women. The closes ups consist of her hand, eyes, mouth, arrow and the
stick of the arrow.
